Make the Custard
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and Grand Marnier until smooth and well combined.
Soak the Bread
Dip each slice of bread into the custard, letting it soak for about 20–30 seconds per side. The bread should be well coated but not falling apart.
Cook
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add butter and let it melt and foam.
Cook the soaked bread slices for 2–3 minutes per side until deeply golden and caramelized. Work in batches if needed, adding more butter as required.
Keep finished slices warm in a 200°F oven while you cook the rest.
Serve
Stack the French toast on a plate. Dust generously with powdered sugar.
Top with a dollop of whipped cream, fresh strawberries, and blueberries. Drizzle with maple syrup and serve immediately.
Melissa's Notes
Brioche or challah makes the best French toast — the enriched dough soaks up the custard beautifully and caramelizes perfectly. Day-old bread works even better as it absorbs the custard without getting soggy. For extra indulgence, use heavy cream instead of milk in the custard.
