Light, creamy and perfectly sweet, this easy Vanilla Buttercream Frosting is ideal for cakes, cupcakes and piped decorations. Whipping the butter until it's very soft and fluffy gives the frosting a smooth, beautiful texture, while the amount of cream can be adjusted depending on how firm or soft you would like it.

Place the softened salted butter in a large mixing bowl.
Using an electric mixer, whip the butter continuously until it is extremely soft, pale and fluffy. Take your time with this step, as thoroughly whipping the butter creates a lighter, smoother frosting.
Add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.
Gradually add the icing sugar, mixing well after each addition. Continue beating until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
Slowly add the coffee cream or whipping cream, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your preferred consistency.
For a stiffer frosting that holds its shape well when piped, use less cream. For a softer, creamier frosting, gradually add more.
Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes or other favourite desserts.
Melissa's Notes
**Make sure the butter is softened** before whipping, but not melted.
**Add the cream gradually** so the frosting doesn't become softer than you would like.
**For detailed piping or warmer conditions**, keep the frosting slightly stiffer.
**If you are using this buttercream for a layered number cake**, you may want to double the recipe depending on the size of the cake and how much frosting you pipe between the layers and over the top.
This frosting is perfect for the Chocolate Number Cake.
